1. Secret Superstar

 Imdb Rating: 8.1/10

The heart-warming story of a teenage girl, from a conservative family, aspiring to become a singer. Despite the odds and domestic abuse, she is determined to succeed and becomes a YouTube hit.  Keep your hankies ready, folks. 


2. Dangal

Imdb Rating:  8.5/10

Egged on by a unrelenting father, the Phogat girls beat patriarchy, Haryanvi boys and petty sports officials to emerge victorious as wrestling champs.  Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar and Fatima Sana Shaikh excel in their roles. This movie, inspired by true events, will give you goosebumps.


3. Guru

Imdb rating – 7.8/10

Mani Ratnam hasn’t directed a better movie since Guru (2007). The movie was a fictionalized, somewhat hagiographic account of industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani’s life. If you like rags-to-riches to stories, this is one is for you.


4. Queen

Imdb Rating: 8.3/10

Kangana Ranaut is a fine actress but even she will find it hard to best her performance in Queen. The actor plays a dreamy middle-class girl who is ditched by her fiance at the last moment. Heartbroken but undeterred, she takes off on a solo European honeymoon and a journey of self-discovery.


5. Dhanak

Imdb Rating: 8.0/10

A young girl who believes that her favourite actor, a superstar, can help her blind younger brother see again, sets out on a journey with him across Rajasthan. Directed by Nagesh Kuknoor who is in fine form,  this is feel good cinema at its best.


6. Swades

Imdb Rating: 8.0/10

A NASA scientist comes back to the village he spent his childhood in to meet the woman who raised him. What he discovers is a society beset with societal problems. This classic back-to-the-roots story is embellished by a mature performance by Shah Rukh Khan and soulful music by A R Rahman.

7. Lagaan

Imdb Rating: 8.1/10

A cricket match to decide the future of a province in British India. That’s the basic premise of this classic masala movie which is teeming with Maharajas, gori memsahibs, evil Brits and lots of hair raising moments. Lagaan along with Dil Chahta Hai — both of which were released in 2001 — redefined Aamir Khan’s career.

Can a man who underwent training to wage war against India turn his life around and become a crusader of justice? That’s the story of this Hansal Mehta movie starring Rajkumar Rao is based on the life of controversial lawyer Shahid Azmi.

This one is a documentary that chronicles the story of Deepika Kumari who, as a girl born on the roadside to abject poverty in rural India,  stumbled upon archery, and within 4 years became the #1 archer in the world.
