I confess to being an Apple fanatic and an admirer of all things that begin with the words ‘iPhone’, but it was simply impossible to not write about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, on account of the ultimate power-packed portfolio that it has presented on its brief preview on Amazon India.
Scheduled to go live for purchase to Amazon Prime customers on December 3rd, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is in itself, a pretty strong statement in power and performance.
The phone caught my attention early-on in the day with an unusual offer – At Rs 71,990 (The phone retails at Rs 69,990 all by itself) there is an option to get the phone and a Sennheiser studio-quality headphone set, which is individually priced at nearly Rs 30,000. And although that was the hook that got me reading about the phone, the sheer volume of powerful features in a device manufactured by Huawei Technologies (I’ve never even considered them a strong player in the smartphone devision, having had my exposure limited to their routers and similar networking devices) got me cyber-drooling.
For starters, let’s look at the industry-changing camera and photography options that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers at its staggering price tag.
I admit to generally possessing a critical eye of brands that I haven’t personally used, but to say that the camera system introduced in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a renaissance in smartphone photography, wouldn’t be a complete lie.
The phone packs in three neat professional photography lenses, one 40 MP Wide Angle, one 20 MP Ultra Wide Angle, and one 8 MP Telephoto. Simply stated, this is one phone that will allow both amateur and semi-professional photographers and videographers to exercise their passion for digital imagery quite like a mid-range DSLR device. No wonder the phone costs more than my existing professional photography setup!
The second show-stealing component of the new Huawei flagship device (yes, I think it’s safe to use the dreaded-by-Apple F-word here), is that it integrates an on-screen fingerprint sensor, in addition to a robust facial recognition system. It’s like having a phone that you would have seen Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond use in those spy classics! And yes, it lets you shoot photos and videos underwater, because the phone is completely water-resistant (Whaaaat!). So it’s a replacement for your next smartphone, your next DSLR, your next GoPro… you get the drill!
The Mate 20 Pro has a host of other drool-worthy features, such as a dual NPU, quite simply unparalleled amounts of connectivity and processing power (and up to 256 GB internal memory), but the one thing which needs to be revealed before we conclude this segment and ask you to check out the purchase page, is that the phone has a wireless charging system that will let you charge other devices wirelessly. So in addition to being everything else, it lets you be the eleventh hour samaritan for anyone who needs their phone or accessory charged wirelessly! Yes – the phone is also a wireless power bank in itself.
Now – having said all of that, let’s go back and re-evaluate the Sennheiser offer before arriving at an honest verdict. I totally think the Rs 69,990 price tag is justified, based on the amount of features the phone brings to the table and to your pocket. So, at another Rs 2,000, the possibility of owning studio-quality monitors, is just too irresistible.
Good job, Huawei. We’ll wait for post-sale reviews to match up the hype, of course.
