‘Thugs of Hindostan’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif, is being touted as Yash Raj’s most ambitious and expensive project till date.
The film reportedly took more than Rs 200 crores to make – which at first notice may seem like lack of foresight on the filmmaker’s behalf, considering the fact that the most money that an Indian Diwali-release has made so far, is only about Rs 250 crores. And yes, there’s a pun intended at only. But Bollywood is the playing field of big numbers and of those who talk a big game and play an even bigger one. Team Yash Raj has spent only about Rs 10 crore on marketing the film so far, including YouTube-based trailer promotions and a synced release of the trailer to mark Yash Chopra’s birth anniversary in September.
However, looking at the amount of pre-release licensing deals lined up for Yash Raj, it makes sense for director Vijay Krishna Acharya (of Dhoom 3 fame) and team to start celebrating early! Reports suggest that deals are already underway for Yash Raj to sell the TV premiere rights for ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ to Sony Pictures Network for a sum ranging between Rs 50-60 crores.
“Thugs of Hindustan is the most exciting TV premiere of the year. On the ratings front, I am confident that it will scale all possible records.” – Neeraj Vyas (Business head, Sony MAX Movie cluster and Sony SAB).
Neeraj declined to comment on the exact figure of the deal, but mentioned that the partnership between Yash Raj and Sony India, is ‘like no other’.
Industry sources have also confirmed that the digital distribution rights for the movie will go to Amazon Prime, for another Rs 50-60 crores (approximately). Executives from Amazon India and Yash Raj Films were unavailable to comment on the same.
The music licensing for ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ will be organized by Yash Raj’s in-house music label, entitling the studio to a 100% retention of all music-derivative royalties.
Post-release collections (An industry estimate)
Yash Raj will also act as the sole distributor of the film, which means that it will collect revenues from nearly 5,000 screens across the country, and another 1,500 screens around the world. Experts have projected (based on the current hype surrounding the movie), that Yash Raj can expect to collect Rs 10-15 crores from single screen shows, Rs 40 crores from multiplex screens and Rs 20 crores from overseas screenings on opening day.
